Foundation Stage Chinese New Year Activities

chinese_new_year.jpgThis week in both the nursery and reception unit the children have been engaged in
activities linked to Chinese New Year. This is the Year of the Tiger and the children have been making chinese dragons, copying Chinese writing,enjoying a stir fry meal and finding out how Chinese New Year is celebrated. As well as finding out about Chinese culture the children have had an opportunity to find how different cultures celebrate special times in their own particular way. The children have enjoyed this very much and you may like to follow this up as at the weekend there are a range of activities in Newcastle on Sunday14 th February 2010.

You may think that new year has already been and gone - but on 14 February 2010 it's Chinese New Year.

Here's a guide to what's happening in Newcastle on the day to welcome in the year of the tiger.

The celebrations run from 11am until 4pm.

• 12pm: Dancing and music with special performances from Edmund Ng's Choi Lee Fut Kung Fu Club.
• Dragon, unicorn and lion procession
• Arts and crafts markets

• North East Chinese Association building: Exhibition of Chinese costumes, food and arts and crafts

Westgate Road
• Chinese Centre: Chinese calligraphy and the chance to make your own Chinese New Year card

Thornton Street
• Settle Down Café: Visions of China: 2003-2009, an exhibition of photography by Victoria Ling
• Charlotte Square: Children's marquee with lantern making, paper cutting and tiger mask making

There'll be live Chinese dancing and music
Blackfriars
• Garden party marquee
• Newcastle University Chinese Students and Scholars Association presents traditional Chinese games, including face painting for children

Low Friar Street
• Bread Point
• 1pm, 2pm, 3pm: Traditional Chinese tea ceremony

Reception Obstacle Course Photo Mash Up

The children from both of the Reception classes took part in an Obstacle course back in October 2008. There are some grerat photo's of the event in this photo mash up. It take about five minutes to view the whole thing, but is well worth it!
