This term Year 5 have been learning about WW2. As part of this we topic we were visited by a local historian. We explored artefacts from the war and decided what they may have been used for.
Please have a look at the attached photos and try to guess their name and use. Maybe test your parents or grandparents!
Have fun,
Mr Dempsey and Mrs Lynch
I was very proud to take 19 girls from Years 5 and 6 to take part in the Gateshead Dance Festival at the Sage yesterday. They represented the school brilliantly with their Charleston flapper dance and their excellent behaviour.
The venue was fantastic and the girls were undaunted by the huge stage and danced their socks (and tap shoes!) off! It was very well organised.
Many other Gateshead schools attended and 28 dances were performed that afternoon, with many more performances in the morning and evening sessions.
I would like to thank parents for their support, especially with the costumes and actually taking time out to attend this event. It was much appreciated.
DVD`s of the event are available for around £5. I will be handing out leaflets today for those interested.

Art teacher, Mr Colin Turnbull has been visiting Year 5 for an on-going art project involving the works of JMW Turner. Turner, a world famous Victorian artist, travelled to the North East many times to capture its raw beauty in his paintings. One he showed us featured Gibside and its grounds. His work links us to our history studies.
We have been encouraged to work individually and in groups and to use a variety of different media, including oil pastels, graphite, water colour and poster paint. We have used the excellent views from the school and Turner`s techniques to inspire our art.
Homework
Mr Turnbull has asked Year 5 to collect as many examples of Turner`s work as possible to develop their art portfolios. If possible, please print at home and bring into school by Monday 24 November.
Good luck!
Today Year 5 children visited St.Barnabas Church in Rowlands Gill. Reverend Hewitt told us all about the church and we had the chance to explore for ourselves. Everyone especially enjoyed finding the mice on the pews!!
If you were on this visit, please tell us about something you learnt or enjoyed.
Thanks, Mr Dempsey and Mrs Lynch.
Year 5 have been studying the writings of Michael Foreman, particularly his award winning book about World War 1, "War Game". We were focusing on his use of strong verbs and adverbs and used them to construct our own complex sentences. We identified with the characters of Will and his friends who joined up in their teens. We imagined ourselves as young recruits in the filthy, inhospitable trenches of the First World War and listened to first hand accounts from war veterans. We then wrote letters home to our friends and families, asking about our loved ones and describing conditions in the trenches. We asked for treats to be sent, such as chocolate and pictures of family and people from home.
If you have encountered Michael Foreman`s book "War Game", we would love to hear what you thought in the form of a book review on this site. Watch this space to read some of our letters home.
Class 5D and 5L

Year 5 (Mrs Lynch and Mr Dempsey) have been designing and making biscuits. We started by tasting a variety of biscuits available in supermarkets. Everone seemed to love pink wafers but fig rolls didn't go down too well!
Next everyone had the chance to design their own biscuit. Some were very imaginative and surprisingly healthy. Watch out Mr McVitie!!
We have just finished adding the final touches. Watch this space for the tasting feedback.

Last week Y5 dissected flowers. We learnt all about the different parts of flowers. Can you remember any of the names?

As part of our food technology project this term, we have been testing breads and bread products with a view to developing our own bread products in a couple of weeks` time.
What the Children say....
She has long black hair just dangling over her shoulders. Brown eyes. She always wears earrins and a necklace. She's good at art and is enthusiastic in every lesson, willing to help as well. Good at dancing (I found this out when we were practising our school play). Quite stylish as well.
