Parachute fun in Y6
Year 6 have been carrying out a parachute investigation. Pupils chose which variable they wanted to change eg area of parachute, mass on the parachute, number of ropes, shape of parachute etc and planned their investigation to see if this variable made any difference to the fall speed. We even took 3 readings for each fall of the chute- averaged them and drew a table and a bar chart or line graph.

Year 5 and 6's Christmas performance review
On the 9th of December 2009 Year 5 and 6 performed in front of an estimate of 250 people. All of these talented children had only 3 weeks to learn their lines and practice their dances. It took great courage for them to enter the stage knowing how many people were watching and with the red hot lights beaming down on them.
All of the children had an extremely nerve racking time but also thoroughly enjoyed their experience. Here's what they had to say.....
Harriet Wilson said :"I was terrified when I went onto the stage, I was mostly scared because I was one of the first people to go on! Backstage it was incredibly hot and stuffy and that made it feel even scarier!"
Our teacher Mrs Mitchell said: "It was a flawless performance and everyone worked hard as a team. The soloists sang with confidence and enthusiasm."
Hannah Grey said : "The play took alot of planning and on the night all the hard work payed off! All the parents loved it."
Mr. Nolan very kindly videoed our performance which is now on sale for any of the children and parents to buy. That was the year 6's last Christmas performance so to make it more memorable for them they did the acting whilst the year 5's did the singing and dancing. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the night.

Year 6 Final Performance
Year 6 treated everyone to a fantastic and emotional final performance today, marking the end of their time at our school. The superb acting portrayed a school reunion in 2029, with scenes of some of the more memorable moments throughout their school lives, and predictions on how some of their teachers may look and sound in 20 years time.
The performance ended in a very tearful time for both children and parents, with the share price for Kleenex Tissues going trough the roof!
Congratulations to all involved, and good luck to all of Year 6 2009!
Here are a few reminders of the event:

Bus trip to Hookergate and Thomas More
![]()
The year 6 children learned all about using the buses for next year when they go to secondary school. Many urban myths were put to rest about the first day at secondary school by Mr Douglas the district bus manager.
The children were taken to Hookergate Secondary School in a double decker yellow scholar bus and from there they were taken to St Thomas More. Mr Douglas showed the children where to catch their different buses along the way and at what time they leave.
The day was very informative for the children and they got a little taste of what it will be like next year. Some were thinking more of their childhood though, by singing 'the wheels on the bus', rather than their future - much to Lewis' dismay.

Cricket Tournament Swalwell
Year six have competed in the Asda Cricket Tournament today. Everyone really enjoyed the day and weather was perfect for cricket play.
Our A team reached the semi-final, put they were pipped at the post by High Spen's team. They came fourth in the end which was excellent.
The day was really good fun and really well organised.

A River's life story
Year 6 have been learning about rivers this term. They have studied the River Usk in Wales and used this knowledge to study our local river- the River Tyne. The children then wanted to share all they had learned and created powerpoints of either the Usk River or the River Tyne. We hope you enjoy them.

Year 6- CLC visit
Year visited Heworth CLC today and had a great time learning more about World War 2. They've made animations of eerie blitz skies. They also had a chance to use control insight where they begin to learn how to write programs to control different buzzers and lights.
They've all had an excellent time and many thanks to Mr Jeeves and all the staff at Heworth who helped us.

Our fabulous athletics team were taking part in the Hookergate cluster athletics competition. May I just say firstly that the children were a delight to take to Hookergate and they did us proud behaviour-wise and talent-wise.
All the children did a great job, with some of the children taking first place in some of the events. It was pointed out to me that Francis Atkinson had completed the hurdle race in an amazing time. Very impressive! But there were many more that did really well.
Sarah Needham, the organiser of the event, deserves a massive thanks for putting on the event that was enjoyed by everyone. A team of 16 will be going on to the Gateshead Arena for our cluster. Fingers crossed that some of our children will be on the team. Sarah will tell us later next week.

Year 6 Basketball Tournament
Year 6 entered the basketball tournament for the Hookergate cluster today. There was tough competition from High Spen and West Lane. Our teams did really well and worked really hard; team one came third and team 2 got the fair play award for excellent fairplay during the whole tournament.
I was really proud of the excellent behaviour of all the children that came. I would like to thank Sarah Needham for organising the event; the kids loved it! Thank you also to Mrs Slee for coming along and lending a hand.

War-torn 6M Persuade their Parents
![]()
In year 6, we are learning about children in World War 2. The children have pretended that they have been evacuated and hate staying with their host families.
Their task was to persuade their parents to take them back. Our target is to improve sentence structure and punctuation this year. Their work is excellent.
Well parents, have they been persuasive enough? Would you take them back?
Let your children know.

Year 6 residential in Gibside
Year 6 have spent a couple of days at our residential destination of Gibside. I think everyone really enjoyed the trip. During their two days at Gibside they had activities like pond dipping, minibeast hunts, long evening walks and orienteering. Even with all this activity, the children were full of energy for the evening time. Where do they get their energy? Although many had no energy for the walk home (surprisingly). Here are a few photos of the trip.

Year 6 trip to the Farne islands
Year 6 have been on a trip to the Farne Islands today. The trip was a great success and I think everyone enjoyed themselves even if some people were feeling a little seasick. We braved the sea, we braved the birds attacking and we braved Karl's projectiles. Here are a few photos to remind you of your trip.

Visit from Ali from the Newcastle Vipers
The children had a real treat today with a visit from Ali from the Newcastle Vipers Ice Hockey team. He came to see what the children knew about the importance of healthy living, exercise and education. I think he was blown away with the amazing answers to his questions from our children.
Dylan(from 6M) was chosen, due to his excellent improvement in attendance, to dress up like an ice hockey player. Ali also rewarded each child in the school with a ticket for the game on Wednesday the 14th of November, when they will be playing Edinbrough. We wish them all the luck in the world for the game.
Here are some pictures of the exciting visit.
